P1: Describe interactive media products
The Sun
The target audience of The Sun would be your C123 as the sun paper is quite cheap and includes a lot of pictures and has a lot of controversial titles which might draw in that audience as well as young people. The interactive elements of the sun are the tabs that enable easy transition between different parts of the sun as well as the images that are clickable that automatically take you to that article they also have a search bar to allow you to look for anything specific. |
The purpose of The Sun is to entertain and inform their audience in a way that makes it fun to read it is aimed at the CDE social grades so the working classes this is why the article is written in a simple fashion so everyone can understand it. The Sun has thousands of stories on the site as it publishes something every day. The Sun is not really taken seriously as they are known for over-exaggerating the news by over sensationalising the article to grab the audience's attention even if the way they right may be misleading. The users are able to sell their stories but they don’t mention the percentage share you get for selling your story users can also leave comments on each article and discuss what they think with other users they can also share the article with their friends through social media as they include buttons to take you to the social media page and share the article.
The sun can be accessed across some platforms such as computer and the phone app the news they cover is the same it’s just the layout of it that changes as a phone has a smaller screen. The Sun’s logo is located in the top left as that is normally where we first look when opening a website as well as it’s quite large meaning we can see it clearly and it will definitely catch our attention.
The Sun’s of-the-fold is Their logo in the top left with navigation elements to different parts of the sights and the main headline normally to do with politics, Royalty or another controversial topic as that is what gets the audience's attention. They also have a sign in feature in the top right and they include ads.
The Sun’s logo is almost identical to YouTube’s as it’s also all red with a white inner part the difference is that youtube has the play button and the Sun has their name this is good and bad as the less known brand could be accused of copying but it’s also a good idea as it is a familiar sight which could convince people to check it out. As well as the colour red has been proven scientifically to be a colour that stands out more especially when it comes to logs and clothing. The Sun uses the colour red to highlight things they want the audience to see for example the title of an article.
My thoughts about the general layout I feel like it is too in your face trying to push that one specific initial article in your face and the red they use is too bright in my opinion and with the white background it creates eye strain if looking at it too long but other than that they went for a simple layout that they can fit a lot of stories and make it look persuasive.
Interactive elements that the sun features are the links to their social media on each article to send tweets and so that the people could discuss with other people with similar views. The Sun also includes a comment section for each article for a more on-site method of communication between users I do not know how the site one is monitored and maintained but it could have a profanity filter to prevent any inappropriate things being said. But they do not include any method of rating the content.
Benefits of the Sun are:
Limitations:
The suitability for purpose
Personally, I feel the sun does what it is meant to do which is to inform and to entertain their audience but I also feel they could improve on the quality of their content as some of it does seem quite random but the site as a whole is well maintained and updated frequently.
Legal and ethical issues
Some Legal implications a news site such as The Sun could face is mostly to do with Libel and slander for example if the feature a story that makes someone lose face or talks badly about them. Other legal implications could be data protection act if they try to take someone's story without the original person who it belongs to permission.
Some ethical implications could be the choice of wording or showing inappropriate pictures as they tend to do for example they have articles where the female celebrity may be in a bikini which is very exposing as it does not cover a lot and that can be inappropriate as younger people can view the newspaper and it also could be affecting people's view of that celebrity.

Marvel
Marvel’s target audience includes a range of people from C123 to your more higher paying people like your A and B people but age rating wise it includes mostly people between the ages of 12-30 and majority male audience as there is a lot of action in Marvel movies and other products, as well as a large use of the male gaze and the over-sexualisation of the female characters it is aimed at that audience as that, is the audience that is most likely to go out to the cinema to watch the movies. I like the features that the Marvel site has as it has a good range of colours but it is not too vibrant colours which could hurt your eyes as well as I am a big Marvel fan an I enjoy the fact that I can easily see what new movies are coming soon as well as the trailers for them which helps me say up to date they also have a media post on top so you can share this information and website with your friends quickly. |
The Marvel website is a place where everything Marvel is located from trailers to character wiki’s as well as any news on new Marvel movies, games and merchandise. On the website you can see the most recent trailer for Marvel infinity war and the comic books that are being released Marvel has created over 4000+ characters each with quite a unique story behind them meaning that the Marvel page has a lot of content to explore and there is something for everyone this is what makes Marvel a great subsidiary. Users can do a number of things on the website from watching different videos posted by Marvel such as snippets of behind the screens, trailers or interviews with actors as well as buying things from the store such as clothing, kitchen accessories and more users can also visit Marvel's social media. In general, the Marvel website has a lot of features and has enough content to keep any user busy for quite the while with reading up on your favourite superheroes or super-villains to interacting with other users.
The Marvel website does not have an app but like the other websites but it is accessible through the internet on practically any device which means it’s very flexible in terms of accessing information. The Marvel logo is located in the top left of the page it is located there as the majority of the sites do this and this is where we would normally expect to see the logo so it makes it familiar to the users. The of-the-fold of Marvel features an image gallery that automatically changes images and at the bottom of the screen, you can see some of the trailers for upcoming movie releases. The design of the Marvel logo is similar to YouTube and The Sun this design has been around from the 1960’s and it’s well recognised by most people as Marvel movies are very popular with the mainstream audiences. Overall I think the colour scheme that marvel website works well as they used a black background which will not strain the eyes especially in the evening as well as highlighting things with red and white. I also like the layout of the sight as it’s user-friendly.
Marvel includes their social media in the hamburger drop-down menu at the bottom they include links to their Facebook, Twitter and YouTube they used icons as the links this is good as it takes up less space and more people know the logos of the social media. There is a liking system but that is connected to Facebook you can also share the posts and comic books but there is no comment system that I could find.
Benefits
Limitations
The suitability for purpose
I think the Marvel website is suitable for the purpose it was created for which is informing the people that are interested in Marvel all the information they want about Marvel and that is the only purpose it is for from movies to comic books, merchandise etc.
Legal and Ethical issues
Some legal implications that Marvel could face if any of their new characters are too similar to someone else and they had the rights to their character first they could try to sue Marvel for Intellectual property and Copyright this is unlikely as Marvel could just buy out the rights and their departments tend to create new original concepts they may be based of another character but they put twists on them to make them unique.Other Copyright related this could be using music in trailers that they have no right to but the Marvel team is part of a Conglomerate so they most likely have people to sort such matters out. Ethical issues they could face is over whether their comic book covers are appropriate for any and all ages if not what could happen if a child saw a graphic image from Deadpool or something else other than this I could not really think of any other issues Marvel could face on their website.

YouTube
YouTube's target audience is mostly the media natives as well as media immigrants this encompasses a large amount of people as YouTube is a platform for people that can post their own videos as long as they are not breaking any of their rules and regulations this means the target audience could range in age from 3 to as high as 80 or even higher as there is something for everyone this means there is something for all of the NRS social grades. I like them because they make looking for videos that interest you easy they have navigation features that make looking for people you subscribed to or videos you liked easy to access as there is the menu style tab on the left which has things like the video history you have watched that you can manually stop or delete or check at any point as well as any playlists you have made which is a multimedia element as it allows you to watch video in a sort of gallery. YouTube’s site layout is very simple and not over the top which makes it easy for everyday users as well as new ones as it is not too overwhelming that it frightens new users from using it. |
YouTube is a platform for people to share videos it has over one billion users across around 88 countries. “YouTube's mission is to give everyone a voice and to show them the world”. Users are able to like, dislike, share, subscribe, donate and download videos across the whole site with features such as top trending with most popular videos being featured their the users have a horizon of videos to pick from with a constantly increasing archive as content creators keep pumping out videos on a regular basis some being able to make a living by having sponsorships with different companies. YouTube is a platform that can be accessed on smart TV ’s, computers, consoles, phones and tablets etc. This makes YouTube easily accessible meaning people can constantly use it this is useful as it expands the viewership. YouTube's logo is a red rectangle with rounded of edges and with a triangle in the middle which is the play button in many programs this design is good as it uses the colour red which is known for being very eye catching and because of the simple design it’s easy to remember. YouTube’s of-the-fold features the videos that are popular as well as some that cookies from other sites might have recommended to you the of-the-fold also includes the top navigation bar as well as having the hamburger drop-down menu on the left these features do not disappear when scrolling this is good as it means it’s easier for users to change videos at will. Another feature of YouTube is that if you're on the phone you can watch a video and start looking for another at the same time as the video shrinks and goes to the bottom right corner. Personally, I like features such as the one on the phone as the little things make a huge difference as it allows you to save time by already knowing what video you want to watch next. I also use YouTube a lot and I know how easy it is to use and how user-friendly it is.
Some of the interactive features that YouTube has are the ability to comment on each video that which helps create a fan base for each channel as well as being to like and support the videos you like by donating this is good as it means the fans can interact and show they like the video to the content creator. Other interactive features they have is the ability to share things on social media and you can talk with other people about their views of a video and other things.
The benefits of YouTube are:
Overall I feel that YouTube is very effective. As it is well organised and allows users to mostly be free and post anything that is appropriate and there is always something to watch. And there are multiple ways that users can support the favourite content creators meaning they will want to produce more good quality videos and it would be a cycle that would continue.
Legal and ethical issues
The digital age made it all the easier for everyone to share videos and content over the internet and a lot of it has a chance to become viral content that’s why laws and ethics have to be considered. Some of the legal implications that many users face is copyright as they don’t really look into the laws when making videos, so when they take a random song or fan art they don’t ask for permissions this is not all users but many of them are unaware that they are breaking the copyright laws and intellectual property acts.
Some ethical issues users and YouTube faces is the content the users post what's appropriate to post and what's not YouTube has a strict policy on this but then there are mishaps such as the Logan Paul thing that happened at the start of 2018 where he filmed someone in the suicide forest which is unethical as it's disrespectful to the person that died as well as their family and friends there are many more cases like this, that is why it's important to have laws in place to prevent younger audiences from seeing such traumatising videos.

The benefits of YouTube are:
- Ability to share content with others
- Anyone can post their own videos
- You can interact with people in the comments sections
- Videos uploaded for free
- Massive audience (with a large reach)
- A lot of the content can be struck by another user for copyright or other reasons and a lot of the times the content is not making money anyway and is just for fun
- A lot of content is not allowed even if it may be for educational purposes
- Lack of control
- Random advertising that can not be more targeted

Similarities on Youtube:
The phone version as well as the computer version look very alike in terms of navigational elements they use the same icons for the same things this is good as it helps the users as if they used one of them they should be able to use the other quite easily as they would already be aware of the features and what they do this would give a feeling of familiarity. Another similarity is that the youtube logo is on the top left this is mostly an aesthetic choice as the login/sign up section is predominantly on the left side on most websites this means that would be the first place where a person would look as that's what they would be used to seeing the same thing can be said about the logo and how stereotypically it’s found on the left side of the screen. Similarities on marvel:

Differences on Youtube:
The layout of how the videos are presented on the phone the videos are presented 1 by 1 in a horizontal fashion with you being to see almost the whole of the next video box whereas on a computer the screen is much larger so it is much more spaced out that's why there are a lot more videos visible as well as why it is presented vertically. Another difference is minor but it is the top bar on the phone it is predominantly whereas on the computer it is predominantly white some other things I have noticed include the fact that on the computer you can upload videos from the of the fold section whereas on the phone you can not.
