P5: Record the different sound elements

Above are all the raw files of all my recording that I will use during my editing while I am creating my final product.
Foley:
The majority of my foley recordings turned out well with the audio not peaking at any point meaning I will most likely use them. However in recording 1, 12 and Door being shut I noticed that there was varying amounts of disruption from wind.
Narrator:
I voiced the narrator and the majority of the lines went smoothly and I tried to give it my all when voicing the narrator to give more emotion. During recording I had issues with several lines which I had to rehearse a few times before re-recording them. The volume is one thing that I will have to adjust as a few of the recordings are a bit too quite and when I will be applying the other sounds on top of it, which could lead to the voice over to not be heard.
Victor:
All of the Victor lines were recorded very well with good sound only in some areas I will have to tweak it, the pitch and tone of the voice over was really good so that will not require any changes. My actor recorded it all the lines in one take which helps since all of them stay consistent whereas if he were to record them on another day the voice may vary slightly.
Clearval:
My voice actor put on a voice for his character which I feel worked very well, he managed to sustain it throughout the whole recording. Similarly to Victor most the lines where recorded on the same day with a few exceptions which did not make a difference. I will have to adjust some of the volumes to make sure they are all equal.

Production:
This is a image of me recording my narrator lines for my production after doing all the necessary preparation, and I am standing up as that helps project my voice better.
Here are my other two voice actors who played victor and Clerval I had them record their lines together as this way they could use more emotion when speaking as they would hear how the other person says their lines. I was also guiding them in how I wanted each line recorded as we were going through the script.

In these 4 screenshots I am setting up the studio in preparation for the production, and I do this by ensuring all the settings on the mixing board are correct, plugging in all microphones adjusting the pop filter and making sure the software I am using which is audacity is working properly and picking up all the audio from the microphones.
This is a necessary step in my production since if I were to attempt to record my production and there was something wrong with the set up it would delay my production which wouldn't be good in a professional production. |
P6: Carry out post-production edits to the sound elements
In these screenshots I am using the filter and EQ setting on adobe audition to edit my audio clip of the breathing so it has a deeper pitch I do this by using the under water shallow preset this created a effect of the voice coming from underwater which also made it sound deeper.

In these screenshots I am adjusting the audio since some of it is peaking, so I turn it down otherwise it would ruin the listening experience for my listeners. I do this with all my raw audio files lowering it to around 6 - 9 decibels to ensure it's still clear but not too loud. I used the little clock like tool which allows you to edit the volume of the audio file, it was very simple to use you increase and decreasing it to right or left.
In these screenshots I'm adding different sound elements such as the voice acting, music and sound effects to the timeline. I have created separate tracks and they each have a purpose the first track being for voice overs, second and third track being for music and ambiance while track 4 is special effects such as foley. This proses took quite a while because of the way I recorded all of the lines for my production which was I recorded almost every sentence separately as I thought this method would be more efficient however it ended up being a bit more time consuming since I had to put all the clips together.
M2: Present the sound elements to an audience to gain feedback
|
After demonstrating snippets of my radio production to my audience they gave me a range of feedback such as how they liked the flow of the narration as well as the sound effects and how they immersed you into the theme of frankenstein with the rain and owl sound effects at the start being good, and my audience also mentioned that the dialogue and the sound effects worked well together and didn’t take away from the overall appeal however some parts of the dialogue had to big of a pause which made it less scary and certain sound effects were too loud and impacted the dialogue which made it hard to hear.

D1: Evaluate how the technical and auditory qualities meet the identified purpose
This is my final version with all the adjustments to the sound levels completed.
Sound levels: Based on audience feedback I realised that the sound levels in certain points are not adjusted correctly to fix this I will listen through my whole production again both with headphones and speakers as that way I can guarantee no matter which method my audience will pick the audio will be adjusted correctly to were it does not impact the appeal of the product. The main thing that needs to be adjusted is the rain sound effect since at times it becomes too loud.
Pauses/spacing: Another point that was brought to my attention was the duration between different audio clips and how some of the gaps are to big creating a pause to the conversation taking away from the mood while others are to small and making the transition in the dialogue less fluent.

To ensure the best quality of sound when exporting my production with all versions I made sure to export it as a uncompressed wav file as this makes sure that no audio data is being removed when playing the file this makes the file larger but since it’s only sound it will not be as big as a mp4 file, this also allows my product to be played on big speakers without any static disturbance making my product enjoyable across all platforms.
Wav files are also the typical standard when it comes to radio as they give you the best possible sound since it’s lossless compression where the original file is not affected whereas if I were to use MP3 which is lossy it would impact the quality of the sound dramatically and it would be noticeable the bigger and the better speakers you have. |
My product is suitable for its purpose since the client asked me to make “Chapter 5 of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel” with no specific time restraints and my final product ended up being 14 minutes and 47 seconds and with all the features they asked for which were “feature ambient sound, sound effects to create atmosphere and it must feature music to keep the audience interested”,”clear actor reading the text” and I have included all these aspects to ensure it appeals to the client.
I also uploaded it on Soundcloud for easy access and distribution to the client and any other members that may need it with all original files also being uploaded for safe keeping.
As for my product being suitable for the target audience I manage this through using conventions of radio storytelling such as including a sound bed throughout the production to keep the audience interested and engaged as well as adding fun and appealing sound effects that allow the audience to imagine the scene they are and all the elements they hear from rain to the animals to chattering of the city. I also picked voice actors with charismatic voices that would appeal to the demographic of radio 4.
