P1: Understanding how sound elements are used
Trailers
The Halo 2 trailer was made to sell the product as this is an advertisement for the release of the collection of games that includes 4 different titles from the series. This product also has been made to entertain as it looks cinematically appealing and interesting to watch. I know this because conventionally that is the purpose of a trailer as it persuades people to buy the product or service.
The Halo 2 trailer used sound in a number of ways, such as to enhance the dialogue, to give meaning to the visual through dialogue and to create nostalgia from the first game by using the iconic soundtrack, they also included soundtracks and sound effects like explosions and sounds of a moving platform to emphasize on the space and futuristic aspects of the game. |

When watching the trailer for halo 2 there is a feeling of happiness as it’s another instalment in the franchise but also the feeling of worry as we get snippets of the story and we don’t know what is going to happen, the jingle/the music that the game is known is the way they create nostalgia for the fans of the franchise.
When looking deeper into the soundscape you can hear the use of diegetic sound so the dialogue, explosions and sounds of moving platforms and there are also elements of non-diegetic sound through the use of music in the background of everything, these complement each other to make the trailer for halo 2 the best it can be

The purpose of the grinch trailer is to sell the product as this is an advertisement for the release of the movie. This product also has been made to entertain as it looks like a family friendly movie. I know this because conventionally that is the purpose of a trailer as it persuades people to buy the product or service. The sound in the product is used to add meaning to the visuals as we could imagine what the characters are saying without the dialogue but it helps to hear the sounds as you get a better idea of the theme and tone the movie will be set in, the specific sounds that can be heard within this product includes dialogue, songs and sound effects.

The sounds create a sense of happiness for the audience as it uses very exaggerated sound effects such as the sound of the grinch putting on his fur on is depicted as a loud elastic sound these sounds are diegetic as the characters can hear them. However there is a clear overlay of music which is non-diegetic sound since the characters can’t hear it.
The sound elements that are present in the soundscape include vocals, a backing track normally very well know songs such as Pharrell Williams song Because i’m happy was in the background while the characters played the dialogue this creates a immersive experience that is suited for the target audience of the movie so children. The sound adds to the visuals as it’s establishes a carefree atmosphere and sets the theme for the trailer that it’s a light hearted comedy, this is mostly done through correct use of volume of the vocals and the soundtrack in the background they overlap but they worked very well together.

The sounds that can be heard in both products include the dialogue from the actors as well as ambience sound, sounds from an existing library. These sounds create a suspenseful effect on the audience through the use of ambience and dialogue. The soundscape contains elements of dialogue, soundtrack as well as other sounds such as knocking on the door, these elements add to the visuals as without the sound the scenes aren’t nearly as scary.
Radio advert

The purpose of these products is to sell and entice people to buy the products. The sounds that can be heard in these adverts include dialogue, jingles, soundtracks and silence. These sounds are normally used as a way of helping people remember the brand so that when ever the jingle or soundtrack is on the customers connect the two together. The sound does not have any real effect on the audience other than a method of informing them that something is going on in the store. The Ikea advert soundscape includes both dialogue and a soundtrack as well as sound effects whereas the Tesco advert is only consistent of dialogue this can be both good and mad as it means Tesco does not have a catchy jingle but it also means the soundtrack/ jingle is not talking away from the overall appeal of the advert. Since there's no imagery both adverts mention products that can be found in their store which makes the customers think of those products if they need them.
