P1: Describe the work of a graphic novel or comic publisher
UNIT:9 P1 From Damain Golik
In the presentation above Is all of my P1 presentation on my research preparing for the creation of my own unique story.
P2: Describe a chosen graphic novel or comic product
I am choosing to analyse a comic book made by Marvel as they are a company well known for making good comic books and they have been around for quite a long time so their style has changed over the years and I want to see the codes and conventions they use, as my idea is also to create a comic like product and this will be a good source of inspiration.
Target audience: Deadpool is known for being quite graphic that's why the target audience would most likely be a 15+ years old as they are at an age were they know what swear words are and know blood and watched some movies or read comic books with gore in them.
Genre: The genre of the comic is Action, Adventure we know this as the cover of the Comic connotes its action as there are explosions in the background and what looks like steam erupting from the ground which normally suggests something is going on around him, we also know it's an adventure as we can see the main character, in this case, Deadpool running away from Thanos but we can see behind Thanos that they are located in space. We also know that it’s an action and adventure as that is what it's labeled as on the store.

Title: From the title we can see that Deadpool's name is a different colour and font this is so that the 2 characters can be told apart even if they don’t look anything like each other and the “VS” in the title has a blood-like font which connotes the fact that it will be a bloody battle that will be violent but its denotation means there will be a fight between the two characters.
Art and Text: The way Deadpool is portrayed by the artist shows that Thanos has power as he was drawn bigger than Deadpool and Deadpool looks like he is running away from him we can tell this by the thing Deadpool says “It was a Joke, Marvel!”, “I was joking when I said I wanted to Fight Thanos” we know Deadpool knows that Thanos is strong because Thanos's name is in bold with an exclamation mark like he is shouting, we can also tell he is running from Thanos as he has his back to him with what looks like explosions coming out from the ground. The fact that we can see space behind Deadpool and Thanos connotes to us that this story will take somewhere in space. The speech bubble used by Deadpool is the yellow bubble with black outlining going away from his face this is the stereotypical type used for character speech and that's how we know Deadpool is saying it. But we can also see that the colours blend in with one another except Deadpool and Thanos, Deadpool has a thin white outline around his upper body this is so he can stand out and not clash with the colours that Thanos has. The use of orange and white is a stereotype for lava normally in comic books but here we are uncertain what it truly is. |
Audience: From the colours used we can tell that the comic is trying to appeal to a younger audience but they also want to appeal to the ABC1 as they have high disposable income and they would have been around when the first heroes from Marvel started appearing and getting popular. The ages Marvel most likely aims for is 7-25 this is quite a wide range but a large number of their audience is also beyond this age range as they may have grown up with Marvel as the company was officially renamed in the 1960’s and for the movie adaptations they make them mostly 12A this is so that 12-year-olds, higher can see it but also so that younger kids can see it with parents.
Meaning: When thinking about what meaning this image creates I could only think of a few things such as the overall image makes us feel bad for Deadpool as he is being chased by Thanos and he did not want this and thought of it as a joke. But knowing the character of Deadpool he must have had something to do with it (being the reason why Thanos is mad) the angle of the shot is a low angle to show Thanos's power.

Backstory: The backstory that they give in this series is that given to us by Deadpool himself as he can break the 4th wall and talk directly to the reader, the backstory he gives us is that him and Thanos go way back and it’s all based around they love “Chimichangas and Death” (Chimichangas are Deadpool’s favourite food and by Death they mean the entity that embodies death) the way that Deadpool explains their love is “And by “DEATH” I don’t mean killing people, I mean the literal physical personification of Death” and that is what this story is based on DP (Deadpool) also states that Thanos was so jealous that Death loves DP and not him that he cursed DP so that he can never die which helps him in his career as a hired killer but he can’t see Death because of this.
Panel: In this panel, we can see that instead of drawing the characters they chose to do an original concept that is not often done which is use the figures of the characters and then add the text to them on top this makes the comic more interesting as it’s not something that is done very often. Meaning: The meaning behind this panel could be just a way of showing DP’s humor as we can see him pointing a gun at Thanos who is holding DP’s head and DP is wearing floaties this can be seen as a thing that is funny as floaties are normally associated with young children which also could be implying that DP is like a big child. Another meaning behind this panel could be just a way to set the scene in a unique way to interest the reader more. |
Boxes: In this panel, we can see a DP logo next to a box that gives us some insight on where we are. The first box says the name of the location while the second says the time this is happening at, this is so that the reader does not get mixed up and so we know if we are looking at things that are going on currently or happened in the past.
Art: The middle right box of the panel is black and orange this type of art style is frequently used in night scenes or when the protagonist is silently taking down a person. And the shot of the island is an extreme wide shot so that they did not have to focus on the detail of the island as we can also see in the other sections of the panel they don’t put a lot of detail in the background. But the character detail is the main focus as that’s the main reason the readers buy the comic it’s for the character so it makes sense that they spend more time drawing the characters. Personality: From this panel, we can tell that the character that was choked had a personality that seemed to be quite smug buy the facial expression he made on the second box from the left in the middle when he is talking on the phone before he was knocked out. On the other hand, if this is someone's first time seeing a DP comic they would be able to see that DP is quite a violent character they could also recognise this by the fact that he is trying to “hide” his identity and he is carrying weapons on his back. |
Development: The development of DP can be seen as some people might not have known much about DP but now they might have a better idea and maybe even guess that he mercenary, but we can also see development in the story as first, we get an establishing shot of the location then we start seeing what is going on which is that DP wants something to do with Victor Von Doom or he wants to kill him.
Appeal To Target Audience: This would appeal to the target audience because it is mostly aimed at people aged 15+ as there is gore included and other things that may be considered inappropriate for a younger audience.
Font: We can see a few different fonts being used the first one was a bold title like the font for the name of the island and when did this happen the other font is for the general text but we can still see some bold words being used to highlight anything important.

Art and Sound effect: The art in the big box on the top of the panel has a first-person view that shows DP shooting Dr. Doom and you can see them using the word and “Kachoom” is used as a sound effect to what it would sound if this was a movie or real life this is a technique that can be seen in old and new comic books. We can also see that they added smoke to show that the bullet is fresh and the gunpowder is still in the air.
Another feature of the art is the small lines around Dr. Doom to indicate movement this is a technique that has been used in comic books, other forms of art for a very long time and it's still in use as its the best way to show movements in a drawing without it actually moving. Box: We can see in the top part of the panel the small box is overlapping the other one, this is to create an action and effect look the person opens the door that's the action and his “death” is the effect. The way they structured this panel was very effective as the image of DP goes into the next panel which makes it look better and less confined to one box. |
