P3: Develop pre-production materials for an original media product
When considering the pre-production materials I will need for my product I have thought of a number of things I will need to plan before making my production:
- A risk assessment
- Budget sheet
- Permissions
- Script
- consideration of the shot types that would be the best for this type of video

Moodboard The mood board includes the shots that I originally planned to include or different locations that I considered when doing my recee as well as capturing the general theme of how my project will look. The reason I picked these locations out of all of Cambridge is because from the definition of culture that I am using "the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively." as used in the Oxford English dictionary and this is how I interpreted it as architecture is one of the things that change the most over the years so I believe it would help show Cambridge's "unique identity" as the brief asked as the is architecture from all sort of different time periods and styles as well as the natural aspect that blends in with the man made creations. |
Colour Scheme
The colour scheme is linked with culture and the things I picked in my mood board as I am mostly going to focus on nature and the architecture culture of Cambridge so I looked at the colours that occurred the most frequently, these are the ones I saw. And since the brief asked me to "produce promotional material for the new regional culture award" I think it would be a waste not to highlight the unique architecture that occurs in Cambridge as depending on which part you are in it can look more old fashion or more modern. |

M2:LEGAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES
http://www.bbfc.co.uk/industry-services/theatrical-ratings/student-films
The film would require a BBFC certificate as the BBFC states “All feature films, short films and trailers that are to be shown theatrically must be submitted to the BBFC, unless permission has been granted by the local authority in the area that the work is being shown.” meaning the film would need it but the council is the authority meaning they could make it available without the need for a BBFC certificate but as this could be posted in other countries its best to have the rating as we do not know if the council of the city where the culture festival is being held will allow for the film to be shown without a BBFc certificate.

VoD providers do not need to use BBFC classification but it’s often recommended as people are normally use to it and makes them feel better and they understand the rating as they have seen them when watching movies in the cinema or CD and as my brief states this will be presented at the Culture festival and will be displayed to the people who are attending. In the Guidelines it states that if a video and or movie is presented in a theatrical way it requires a BBFC rating as that is a large audience. The are many VoD providers that provide the BBFC classification the Vevo channels on youtube as well other companies such as Netflix or Amazon Instant Video/Prime Instant Video.
The rating I would most likely get is a U for universal what the BBFC states about this is “A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over, although it is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. U films should be set within a positive framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror. “ I know my film would get this as it will not include any aspects of (Discrimination, Drugs, Imitable behaviour, Language, nudity, sex, threat and violence) meaning it should fit into the U rating but as the BBFC states there is no way to tell what can upset people or children so you can never be fully sure.

Location permissions:
Some legal implications when acquiring permissions could be if the place you have asked for permission denied you it and you still went ahead anyway and filmed this would be a legal implication as not only could you get sued for breaking the law by not respecting another companies rights but also the council could get sued as they are the ones that hired you to produce it.
Ethical implications it would be ethically wrong if you ignored what another person told you not only that but it would be rude and disrespectful.
After asking the Fitzwilliam museum for permission to film they denied it but they said that I was allowed to take pictures they said if I did want to film I would have to pay around £200 plus depending how big the production crew is. This means I will not be able to film there as I do not have permission but I will still be able to take pictures which is what I will do as I do not have any budget as I am a student if I was a professional production company with a proper budget I would pay the £200+ as it would make my production look much better than still images.
Contracts for voice actors:
Legal implications include if the voice actors contract states they can only work for a certain amount of hours and you over work them or if they end up not wanting to have there voice in the production and if the contract states they can do that you would have to respect what they said and remove that clip from the film if not they you are legally allowed to use that voice recording.
Ethical implications include using the voice actors voice even when they stated they don’t want it in the production this is ethically wrong as you are doing something against their will which is taking away some of their rights.
BBFC rating why might this be needed:
Legal implications if you were to publish a film in a theatrical setting without the permission of the local authorities you could be told to stop the film and could face a fine or be involved in a lawsuit as well as receiving complaints from people who are watching the film as the video could have impacted them one way or another.
Ethical implications could include showing the film with the knowledge that you do not have the right to do so without the BBFC rating or the councils approval this could be ethically wrong as you would could be exposing the audience to something they did not have to see.
ASA
“The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the independent body that enforces and administers the Code, ensuring that the self-regulatory system works in the public interest. The ASA's activities include investigating and rulingon complaints and conducting research.”
Legal implications could include not appealing to the standards this could be for a few reasons or one the to options that could occur after this could be a lawsuit by the person that was affected or they could ask you just to fix the part of the film/advert that is not up to standards
Ethical implications this could include the fact that it is ethically wrong to show something to a mass audience that is not up to the standards of the industry.
Music use
Some of the legal and ethical issues I will have to think about during the post-production is what are the rights behind the music normally when it comes to music it takes 95 years from the year of its first publication or 120 years from the year of its creation whichever expires first it becomes available for public use as it becomes a part of the public domain. But I’ll be using more modern music so I will have to check the rights around that as some do allow for public use as long as royalties are given which basically are the links to the owners websites of preference as long as that is included then the content creator is free to use it and this is also the route I will take.

Possible issues:
The documents I have signed in P3 and the permissions I asked for through email will allow me to resolve any issues all I will have to do before going out filming is print out those permissions and show them to anyone who questions my filming in the location. I could also show them my risk assessment to show that I have considered all things that could go wrong and have a plan for what to do if something does go wrong this should be enough to resolve most if not all issues.
